Crow chair says race behind recall of Indian sheriff
Tuesday, October 7, 2008

A recall election against the Indian sheriff in Big Horn County is motivated by race, the chairman of the Crow Tribe of Montana says.

"Politics in Big Horn comes down to if you're red or white," Chairman Carl Venne told The Billings Gazette.

Venne said the tribe will back Lawrence "Pete" Big Hair, who is Crow, in the November 4 election. Big Hair is accused of being incompetent, hiring unqualified people and violating a code of ethics

Big Hair, who has not commented about the recall, is reportedly under investigation by the Montana Department of Justice, The Billings Gazette reported. He was arrested on domestic violence charges in Crow tribal court in June.
