Attorney compares Public Law 280 extermination

States that exercise jurisdiction in Indian Country are supporting extermination of tribal nations, attorney Terry Janis says.
Janis, a member of the
Oglala Sioux
Tribe of South Dakota, said Congress passed
Public Law
280 at the height of the termination era in the 1950s and 1960s. Tribes fell into poverty, lost their identity and lost their land as a result of the policy.
Termination stopped in the 1970s but Public Law 280 remains on the books. Janis, who works with the
Indian Land Tenure Foundation in Minnesota, said the continues to affect tribal-state relations.
"The history in Minnesota is one of termination that we carry on today," Janis said in a speech, The Republican Eagle reported.
