Santa Fe Indian School sued over alleged rape
A lawsuit against Santa Fe Indian School and a former coach at the New Mexico institution has been moved to federal court.

A former student accuses former basketball assistant coach J.R. Abeyta of supplying her with alcohol and raping her last year. The incident allegedly occurred at a hotel owned by Sandia Pueblo while the team was at a basketball tournament in Albuquerque.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs investigated the allegations and recommended criminal charges against Abeyta. It doesn't appear any indictments have been filed by the U.S. Attorney's Office in New Mexico.

Abeyta and his father, Johnny Abeyta, the head coach at the school, resigned as the incident made local news. They both blame the school for pursuing false "rumors."

The Abeytas are from Ohkay Owingeh, formerly known as San Juan Pueblo.
