Anchorage paper series on Alaska Native education
The Anchorage Daily News is starting a series on the education of Alaska Native students in public schools.

The first story explores low test scores and high drop out rates among Native students. Last year, Native students fell 17 points behind on reading and writing tests and 17 points on math tests.

Only 32 percent of Native students had enough credits to graduate after four years, according to data from last year. The average among all students was 64 percent.

"The needs of Alaska Native/American Indian students are profound," said the Anchorage School District, which educates about 4,200 Native students.

In hopes of changing course, the district is using federal and state funds to beef up tutoring for Native students. The district is also seeking funds for specialized Native programs.

The series continues next Thursday.
