The Osage Nation of Oklahoma has reduced the $3,500 scholarship awards that the tribe promised to college students.

About 400 students were told they were getting the scholarship. But only about half are actually getting the full amount, a tribal lawmaker said.

The tribe's Education Department said it cut the award due to a tax issue. Students have to pay taxes on the portion of the scholarship that goes towards room and board, an official said.

"This should never have happened," Sheryl Hill, whose plans to attend Pawnee Nation College might end without the full amount, told The Tulsa World. "I'm concerned. I'm very concerned about it. The ball was dropped."
