First lady shows Indian Native holiday ornaments

First Lady Michelle Obama gave Oprah Winfrey a tour of the White House and showed off a Christmas tree with ornaments from two tribes.

The Eagle Shield Senior Center from the Blackfeet Nation in Montana decorated 10 ornaments. Five young artists beaded and painted the ornaments with important tribal and local symbols.

"They were just beautiful," elder programs director Connie Bremner told The Great Falls Tribune. "These young people did a terrific job."

The Omaha Tribe of Nebraska also decorated ornaments for the tree. One depicts Susan La Flesche Picotte, the first Indian woman to receive a medical degree.

The Oprah White House special aired Sunday night. The Home and Garden network will air a show that features a segment on the Indian ornaments this Sunday.
