Rep. Bono Mack calls for probe of tribal TANF program
Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-California) called on the Department of Health and Human Services to investigate the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program run by the Torres-Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians.

Bono Mack said audits have shown misuse of federal funds by the tribe. She said HHS should consider taking over the TANF program, which services American Indian families in Riverside and Los Angeles counties.

The Palm Springs Desert Sun published a lengthy investigation into the tribe's program last month. The probe revealed questionable use of federal funds -- potentially up to $6 million.
