'Avatar' director takes up indigenous environmental fight

James Cameron, the award-winning director of the blockbuster Avatar, is taking up indigenous environmental causes.

Cameron said he was always interested in environmental issues. But after meeting with tribes in Brazil who are battling a dam and hearing from other indigenous groups, he plans to get more involved.

“Any direct experience that I have with indigenous peoples and their plights may feed into the nature of the story I choose to tell,” Cameron told The New York Times “In fact, it almost certainly will.”

Commentators have compared the Avatar story to any number of indigenous struggles, including uranium development on the Navajo Nation.
