Sydna Yellowfish, a member of the Otoe-Missouria Tribe of Oklahoma, was named Oklahoma Native American Woman of the Year by the Changing Winds Cultural Society.

Yellowfish has taught Indian expressions and Indian literature in the Edmond School District for the past 25 years. She also serves as the district's Indian education coordinator, overseeing about 1,100 Indian students.

"This goes back to my parents, my grandparents and the elders of our tribe, teaching me those traditions that our tribes do, and wanting to educate the next generation and the general public about Native American people and our culture,” Yellowfish told The Oklahoman.

In 2008, Yellowfish was named Indian Educator of the Year by the Oklahoma Council for Indian Education.
