Little Traverse Bay Bands woman receives Michigan arts award
Renee Wasson Dillard, a member of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, is one of four recipients of the 2010 Michigan Heritage Award.

Dillard is being honored for preserving tribal traditions. She specializes in black ash basketry, finger weaving and other natural fiber arts.

“My mother told me this information does not belong to me, it belongs to the Anishinabe people,” Dillard told The Petoskey News-Review. “It’s my journey to re-teach our people these ways ... I must help people realize our past so we can see our tomorrow.”

Dillard will be presented with the award on August 14 during the Great Lakes Folk Festival.
