Oglala Sioux Tribe's historic preservation office monitors work
The Oglala Sioux Tribe is monitoring construction of a highway on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

Six representatives from the tribe's historic preservation office are on site to look for anything of historical or cultural significance. Plans have been changed in order to address finds along the route of U.S. Highway 18.

"For the first time in western South Dakota, we're using monitors ... because of the probability of finding something," Todd Seaman, the regional engineer for South Dakota Department of Transportation, told The Rapid City Journal.

The state is using federal funds for the project so it must comply with the National Historic Preservation Act, which requires tribal consultation and input.
