Flathead Reservation hosts the 113th annual Arlee Celebration

The 113th annual Arlee Celebration kicks off this Thursday on the Flathead Reservation in Montana.

The event began in the late 1800s after the federal government banned cultural gatherings. So leaders of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes told the Indian agent they were going to celebrate the Fourth of July instead.

"The chief was kind of smart," powwow vice chairman Johnny Arlee told The Missoulian.

The celebration now attracts thousands over five days. It's believed to be the fourth largest powwow in the U.S.
