New chairman of Lumbee Tribe stresses unity at inauguration





Paul Brooks was sworn in as chairman of Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina on Monday.

Brooks vowed to unite the tribe, which has endured controversy in recent years. Most of it has been centered around the tribe's bid for federal recognition.

"This position is not about self-gain," Brooks told The Fayetteville Observer. "This position is about self-service. We can do the right thing. We have a lot of smart people out here

The tribe must go through Congress to gain federal recognition.
