Washington governor signs Public Law 280 retrocession bill

Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire (D) signed a bill that will allow the state to retrocede its jurisdiction under Public Law 280.

The bill allows tribes to request for the state to give up its criminal and civil jurisdiction. The request will then be forwarded to the federal government for final approval.

Tribes lobbied heavily for the bill. Similar measures have been enacted in other states that fell under PL280.
