High school in California looking to offer Yurok language class

A public high school in California is proposing to offer a Yurok language class for the first time next fall.

Eureka High School is working with the Yurok Tribe on the plan. The tribe will contribute $5,000 toward the class, which requires approval by the school's curriculum committee and the school board.

"We're probably one of the more established native language programs in the nation," Jim McQuillen, the director of the tribe's education department, told The Eureka Times-Standard.

The language was down to just a handful of elderly speakers when the tribe stepped in to preserve it for future generations.
