Piscataway tribes meet for first powwow after state recognition

Members of the Piscataway Conoy Tribe and the Piscataway Indian Nation met for a powwow earlier this month, their first since gaining recognition from the state of Maryland.

The tribes sought recognition for hundreds of years. Now that they are "official," they are proud of their new status but aren't sure what benefits it might bring to their people.

“It’s like the old joke about a dog chasing a car. We’ve got it; now what do we do with it?” Rico Newman, a spokesman for the Piscataway-Conoy Confederacy and Subtribes, told The Washington Post. “We have to determine that.”
