The
Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation of California is working to diversity its economic holdings.
The tribe already operates a successful casino. But Chairman Marshall McKay said one of its goals is to base 30 percent of its revenue on farming.
To reach that goal, the tribe operates the Yocha Dehe Farm and Ranch. The 1,389-acre property produces nuts, fruits, vegetables, wheat, safflower and alfalfa, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The tribe also grazes 300 cattle on an additional 9,000 acres of rangeland.
And the tribe recently bought an olive press to market its own brand of oil.
Despite the tribe's large land holdings -- 11,295 acres in total -- only 259 acres is in trust. The tribe is seeking to have about 800 acres placed in trust.
