Blackfeet Nation declares emergency amid leadership turmoil

The Blackfeet Nation of Montana declared a state of emergency on Monday as a leadership dispute deepened.

The council suspended three more members, bringing the total number of suspended or ousted council members to five. The council has nine members.

“We’ve declared a state of emergency,” Chairman Willie Sharp, whose leadership has been disputed by some of the suspended council members, told The Great Falls Tribune.

Tribal members who are unhappy with the turmoil protested at the council headquarters, prompting the council to call in additional law enforcement, the paper said.
