Rosebud Sioux Tribe faces November 30 deadline on sacred site

The Rosebud Sioux Tribe has until November 30 to come up with $8.1 million to buy a sacred site in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

The tribe already made an earnest payment of $900,000 to buy Pe’ Sla. But so far no other Sioux tribe have made a firm commitment to contribute to the cost of acquiring the 1,900-acre site.

“Most of the tribes want to do something, but it’s very difficult for them to raise any money, especially of this magnitude," Louis Wayne Boyd, the treasurer of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, told The New York Times.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe plans to help. But how much hasn't been determined.

“Our tribe, even though we’re a poor tribe, we’ll come up with some money,” Tom Poor Bear, the vice president of the tribe, told the paper.

The Last Real Indians led a fundraising effort over the Internet that has brought in more than $330,000.
