Denise Juneau maintains slim lead in Montana public school race

Democrat Denise Juneau, the first American Indian to run the Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction, is holding onto a slim lead against Republican Sandy Welch.

As of Thursday morning, Juneau was ahead by less than 2,000 votes. Results are still being counted from Yellowstone County, the state's most populous.

Juneau is a member of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation of North Dakota. She was raised on the Blackfeet Nation in Montana.
