California Assemblyman Roger Hernandez (D) introduced a bill to make Native American Day an official holiday in the state.

Native American Day is currently recognized on the fourth Monday in September. AB55 would move the holiday to the second Monday of October, currently designated as Columbus Day.

“Columbus Day is still recognized in California, despite the egregious actions taken against Native American people," Hernandez said in a press release, according to news reports.

If the bill becomes law, Native American Day will be a paid holiday for state workers.
