Arizona governor declares disaster for Navajo and Hopi tribes

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) issued a disaster declaration for the Navajo Nation and the Hopi Tribe.

Both tribes have been dealing with severe winter weather issues. There have been frozen pipes and water shortages on both reservations since the middle of last month.

"Record or near record-low temperatures have resulted in significant damage to potable water infrastructure in the area," Brewer's office said in a press release. "The magnitude of the damage has caused a shortage of drinking water that threatens public safety and the operation of basic infrastructure, including schools and businesses."

Brewer signed the declaration of emergency on Tuesday.
