DOJ and NCAI file briefs in Montana Indian voting rights case

The Department of Justice and the National Congress of American Indians submitted briefs in an Indian voting rights case in Montana.

Members of the Crow Tribe, the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the Fort Belknap Indian Community sued the state in order to establish satellite voting offices on their reservations. Judge Richard Cebull rejected their request so the plaintiffs have taken their case to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

"Refusing to establish early voter and registration sites in satellite locations on Indian reservations discriminates against American Indians," NCAI said in its brief.

Turtle Talk has posted documents from the case, Wandering Medicine v. McCulloch.
