The Blackfeet Nation is weighing charges against one of its council members who also serves in the Montana Legislature.

State Sen. Shannon Augare (D) was stopped by a Glacier County sheriff's deputy on Sunday after allegedly being seen driving erratically. He reportedly said the officer lacked jurisdiction since he is a tribal member and he was stopped in Indian Country.

Augare reportedly drove away before the deputy could take any action. The case was referred to the tribe, whose officers have launched an investigation.

Augare testified before the Senate Indian Affairs Committee on May 8 to push for approval of the tribe's water rights settlement.
