Official results show that members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota voted to legalize alcohol sales on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

The final tally was 1,871 to 1,679 in favor. The tribe will now develop an alcohol code, a process that one council member said could take six months to a year.

“This is a new era we’re in. We’ve got to remember now we lived dry for 100 years and it was proven that prohibition didn’t work. We’re in new territory now," council member Larry Eagle Bull told the Associated Press.

Pine Ridge was the last dry reservation in South Dakota. A majority of tribes in the lower 48 allow liquor on their reservations but limit it to gaming facilities, hotels and tourist ventures.
