Shinnecock Nation elects new leaders under new constitution

The Shinnecock Nation of New York elected a new slate of leaders on Tuesday under a new constitution.
Since 1792, the tribe has been led by a board of three trustees who served one-year terms. The tribe will now be governed by a council of seven trustees who will serve two-year terms.
The tribe reformed its government after winning federal recognition in August 2010. A new constitution was adopted in February but some members are questioning whether the election was properly held.
