Disenrollment is a controversial issue in Indian Country but one tribe is trying to go in the opposite direction in terms of enrollment.

The San Carlos Apache Tribe of Arizona is encouraging more people to enroll. Membership currently stands at 15,393 people.

“We wanted to work on increasing our tribal enrollment numbers because we found out that some children are not enrolled, especially at the beginning of the school year,” said Richard Hoffman, the director of the enrollment department, The Eastern Arizona Courier reported.

Hoffman said accurate enrollment numbers lead to better federal funding. It also helps the tribe pass on its culture and assert jurisdiction in Indian Child Welfare Act cases, he said.
