The city commission in Shawnee, Oklahoma, deadlocked 3-3 on a land detachment petition submitted by the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.

The tribe filed the petition after the city claimed tribal businesses must collect the city's five percent sales tax. The city halted the effort but the tribe still wants a formal declaration that its trust lands do not fall under local jurisdiction.

Turnout for the hearing was strong, according to news reports. There appeared to be more supporters of the petition than opponents but The Tecumseh Countywide News said the city limited each side to about 30 minutes.

The petition covers 1,724 acres of trust land. The properties are shown in pink on the image above.
