Leander "Russ" McDonald, the president of the United Tribes Technical College, has been named to a panel to help choose a new nickname for the University of North Dakota.

McDonald is an alumnus of UND and a former chairman of the Spirit Lake Nation. He joins a panel of students, faculty and alumni that will come up with a list of names by early May, The Grand Forks Herald reported.

UND retired its "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo in 2012 after failing to comply with the NCAA policy against hostile and abusive mascots. The Spirit Lake Nation at one point supported keeping the name.
