The Citizen Potawatomi Nation entered into a $5 million agreement with St. Gregory's University in Oklahoma.

The money will create a six-year scholarship program for tribal members. Up to 60 students will be able to attend St. Gregory's without paying tuition.

"The Citizen Potawatomi Nation is proud to help more tribal members earn degrees to ensure their own financial security while simultaneously strengthening St. Gregory’s economic sustainability," Chairman John “Rocky” Barrett said in a press release. "We’re continuing the partnership formed with the monastic community 140 years ago when our ancestors helped two French monks found the school at the original site at Sacred Heart mission.”

In 1876, the tribe issued a grant to the monks to start the mission. The original site housed two Indian schools before a fire destroyed nearly every structure in 1907.

The monks eventually chose a new location for St. Gregory's, which is located in Shawnee, tribal headquarters.
