A U.S. Marine veteran who is Native American and African American suffered serious injuries in a race-related incident in Wyoming earlier this month.

Clayton Denny, 25, was attacked by two men in Sheridan in the early morning hours of May 8. He suffered a concussion, a broken facial bone and multiple head wounds, The Sheridan Press reported.

Dylan Dygert, 21, and Jacob Olson, 26, are charged with with aggravated assault but since Wyoming does not have a hate crimes statute, they aren't facing any charges for targeting Denny based on his race. A lieutenant with the Sheridan Police Department told the paper that there's currently no probable cause to charge the two men under federal hate crime laws, although the investigation is ongoing.

Denny has remained in high spirits throughout the ordeal. He underwent surgery last week to have the orbital under his left eye reconstructed.

"I still consider Sheridan a nice community because of this love and support we getting from everyone, near and far," Denny wrote on Facebook.

Denny's Native ancestry comes from the Chippewa Cree Tribe. He was raised in Montana and is currently living in Wyoming to study at Sheridan College.
