A former student who was the victim of a sexual assault at Haskell Indian Nations University is suing the federally-operated institution in Kansas. The student was 19 years old and a freshman when she was assaulted at the college in November 2014. Two former students were charged with the crime but their cases remain unresolved after trials failed to result in unanimous verdicts. "Jane Doe H" ended up being expelled after an alleged incident involving another student. She is now accusing Haskell of violating Title IX, a federal law that protects people from discrimination based on sex or gender. "On or about the afternoon of April 1, 2016, HINU administrators expelled plaintiff and banned her from campus without conducting an investigation or providing plaintiff any due process," a complaint filed in federal court reads. The lawsuit is the second filed against Haskell in connection with the sexual assault. Angelina Adams, a counselor who was assigned to help the victim, alleges the university violated Tittle IX by releasing confidential information about "Jane Doe H." The Brown & Curry law firm is representing both the former student and Adams. Galen Satoe, now 21, and Jared Wheeler, now 20, have been charged in Douglas County in connection with the sexual assault at Haskell. Both went on trial in separate proceedings this year but the juries in both cases were unable to reach unanimous verdicts, The Lawrence Journal-World reported. Satoe and Wheeler are both from Oklahoma. They were expelled after the incident, The Journal-World reported. Wheeler is going to trial again in December and Satoe will be retried in February, the paper reported. Read More on the Story:
