Beluga in danger

Facebook Twitter
JUNE 1, 2000

The beluga whale in Cook Inlet, important to the culture and subsistence of Alaskan Natives, has been officially listed as "depleted" under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The Tyonek will still harvest one beluga this summer and the National Marine Fisheries Service hopes to come to an agreement to regulate beluga hunting with the Cook Inlet Marine Mammal Council, a coalition of tribal governments.

A listing of depleted is not as strong as a listing of endangered under the Endangered Species Act.
