Nader / LaDuke under fire

AUGUST 14, 2000

The Green Party slate of Ralph Nader and Winona LaDuke are coming under fire from animal rights activists for their support of treaty rights.

LaDuke, an Ojibwe activist, said through a spokesman that she supports treaty rights, which would extend the right of the Makah Nation of Washington to take whales. The stance has surprised and angered activists, who expected the Green Party to support their cause.

The Green Party says the candidates stand by their views and there is no dissent within the party over the issue.
