APRIL 18, 2001 Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) on Tusday said rising numbers of children who are obese and or who have diabetes led to his decision to co-sponsor a bill that will require schools in the National School Lunch Program to ban the sale or distribution of any soft drinks or sugary foods during lunch and breakfast hours. Bingaman said consumption of soda pop and junk food is partly to blame for the rising numbers. But the ational Soft Drink Association says a sedentary lifestyle is the real culprit.
