FROM THE ARCHIVE
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2001 The Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs on Monday linked the Persian Gulf War to development of Lou Gehrig's disease, paving the way for compensation and benefits for those afflicted with the fatal neurological disorder. According to a study, personnel who served in the 1991 conflict are almost twice as likely to develop ALS, a disease where nerve cells that determine muscle control deteriorate. The study is termed "preliminary" but will be published in a medical journal for peer review, said government officials. The average age at which ALS appears is 55. After which, only half of the afflicted live more than three years. Get the Story:
