JANUARY 18, 2001

The Mexican Army on Wednesday closed the fourth of seven army bases in the southern state of Chiapas, the location of an Indian-rights movement.

The bases are being closed to fulfill promises made to the Zapatista movement. Some of the bases will remain open, though, to protect public safey.
