JANUARY 23, 2001 President George W. Bush on Monday picked Michael Powell, the son of newly confirmed Secretary of State Colin Powell, to head the Federal Communications Commission. Powell would be the second African-American to hold the position of Chairman. The first was the now-departed William Kennard, who made bridging the digital divide in Indian Country and other underserved communities one of his top priorities. Powell is currently an FCC commissioner. His new position does not require Senate confirmation. Get the Story:
