JULY 2, 2001 Although the Supreme Court hasn't yet issued all of its rulings -- including one affecting tribes -- political pundits are weighing in the October 2000-2001 term. Part of the focus is on the Bush v. Gore case and how the 5 to 4 split along liberal-conservative lines reflected 26 out of the 79 decisions handed down by the Court so far. At 33 percent, it was the highest number decided by 5-4 votes since the current set of Justices began serving in 1994-1995. The New York times terms "obscure" the one case so far which has come down in favor of Indian Country. By a 5-4 vote, the Court upheld the Coeur d'Alene Tribe of Idaho's ownership to the southern third of Lake Coeur d'Alene. The Court has yet to rule on whether tribes are subject to certain federal taxes on gaming proceeds. Get the Story:
