OCTOBER 9, 2000 Richard Velky, chief of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation of Connecticut, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and third-degree criminal mischief during an incident involving the wife of Alan Russell, chairman of the Schaghticoke Indian Tribe. The two factions have battled one another for control of the state-recognized tribe. Velky is the more vocal of the two. A US District Judge in Connecticut has recently decided to rule on whether or not the tribe is a tribe for purposes of federal law. Get the Story:
