She was only eight months old at the time, but Emma Bear was the last link to an 1898 battle between Ojibwes and white soldiers. She died on Friday in Minnesota at the age of 103.

On October 5, 1898, about 30 soldiers invaded the Ojibwe community of Bear Island. They were looking for an alleged bootlegger.

The Ojibwes, however, fought back, leading to the deaths of six and at least 10 wounded. No Ojibwe injuries were reported.
