The House gave final approval on Wednesday to a bill that would update several laws benefiting dozens of tribes.

Rep. Richard Pombo (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Resources Committee, praised the passage of the Native American Technical Corrections Act of 2003 (S.523). "While technical on the surface, it directly addresses issues critical to Indian Country, further strengthening tribal sovereignty and promoting economic development. With many tribes visiting Washington this week, I am pleased that my colleagues have acted to preserve the spirit and dignity of Native Americans across the country," he said.

S.523 is sponsored by Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.), chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. It amends existing laws relating to specific tribes, extends deadlines and modifies other Indian programs.

S.523 cleared the Senate last August. It now goes to President Bush for his signature.
