The entire adult membership of the Kickapoo Tribe of Texas kicked out its tribal council on Monday.

The San Antonio Express-News reported that approximately 200 voted with their feet. According to a Kickapoo tradition, they stood in front of the administrative building in protest of chairman Raul Garza and his associates.

Disgruntled members said they asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs for help. "They basically told us last week that if there was no forum for these grievances, they (the Kickapoo) should look to traditional means of resolving disputes, and that they would be hard-pressed not to recognize the outcome," said a tribal member.

The new council was sworn in during a trilingual ceremony: Kickapoo, Spanish and English.

Ed. Note: According to a San Antonio Express-News correction published October 30, it was only a "large majority" of tribal members who acted on Monday.
