Drug reportedly reduces craving for alcohol

FRIDAY, MAY 16, 2003 Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center have completed a study that shows a drug used for treating seizures also reduces the craving for alcohol. The drug, topiramate, was given to half of the 150 participants. It was four times better in terms of heavy drinking and eight times better in terms of complete abstinence, the lead investigator told The Washington Post. The Food and Drug Administration has not approved the drug for alcohol treatment. The study was published in The Lancet, a medical journal. Get the Story:
