The bison herd in Yellowstone National Park will top 4,000, according to the director of the park's Bison Ecology and Management Center.

The park's "peak" population is considered 3,000. The animals tend to wander outside park boundaries when the peak is reached.

At such high levels, the state of Montana is allowed to kill the bison when they wander outside the park without testing for brucellosis, a deadly cattle disease.
