The former chairmen of two of the largest art auction houses in the world were indicted on Wednesday in New York on federal charges of price fixing.

Alfred Taubman of Sotheby's and Sir Anthony Tennant, of Christie's face federal antitrust charges over allegations they fixed commission fees charged to more than 130,000 customers over six years. The charges are the result of a four-year investigation.

Lawyers the New York Times said were close to the investigation told the paper extradition of Tennant was unlikely.

The auction houses have some of the world's most expensive and sought-after American Indian and indigenous art and artifact collections.
