OCTOBER 3, 2000 The Arizona man who murdered Tenny Gatewood Jr., a White Mountain Apache tribal police officer, was sentenced to 42 years in prison. Frank Monte Banashley Sr. pleaded guilty to the second degree murder of Gatewood. He was murdered while on duty alone on the tribe's reservation. Banashley and his son also admitted they broke into a store and stole beer and soda. In December, Gatewood attempted to arrest the elder Banashley, then his son got out of their vehicle and forced Gatewood to the ground. The elder Banashley then shot Gatewood in the head. Both are members of the tribe. They lived on the reservation and were sentenced in federal court for their offense. The younger Banashley was sentenced to nine years. A total of about $6,600 in restitution is to be paid by both to Gatewood's family. Get the Story:
