The Torres Martinez Band of Desert Cahuilla Indians is considering suing California Governor Gray Davis for his alleged failure to enter in compact negotiations for a casino.

The tribe asked Davis to begin negotiations in November 1999 but hasn't received a response yet. Since then, the tribe's land and water settlement has gone into effect, which provides the remote tribe the opportunity to buy more lucrative land on which they can build a casino.

But until that is worked out, a spokesperson for the Governor says a compact won't be discussed.

The tribe's gaming partner is low on funds and is seeking more investors.
