Indian preference an issue for tribe

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2002

The Passamaquoddy Tribe of the Pleasant Point Reservation in Maine is moving to enforce its Indian preference policy to try and keep young tribal members at home.

The policy has been in place for more than two decades but not really used. After the issue was brought up at a council meeting last month, there was a report of the word "racist" spray-painted on the tribe's social services offices at the tribal headquarters.

According to the Bangor Daily News, up to five non-Indian employees might be affected. The paper does not say how many total employees are employed by the tribe.
