MARCH 29, 2001

Ari Fleischer, President Bush's press secretary, on Wednesday could not confirm whether or not the President has officially closed the White House Office for Women's Initiatives.

When asked about a report in The Boston Globe, Fleischer responded to reporters: "I don't have a final answer on that yet . . .I have not gotten to the bottom of it yet." The Washington Post today reports that the office, implemented during the Clinton administration to be a liason to women's groups, now haw an outgoing message on its voice mail saying that the office no longer exists and would no longer return calls.

Bush officials say that the office's staffers will be integrated into other areas in the White House.

Bush is also suspending Clinton's office and initiative on race.
